Dioscorea esculenta (Chinese Sweet Yam)
4 (7)m, Chinese Sweet Yam is similar to Dioscorea bulbifera with very large, cordate (heartshaped) leaves on twining annual stems from a subterranean large root and a couple of cherry-sized axillary, dark green to purplish green bulbils. Native of India, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, and Thailand. The roots are used like from other edible species cooked or baked and served like potatoes as a side-dish. For any rich, well drained soil in a sunny to partially shaded spot. During dormancy in winter keep roots dry and cool at a minimum of some 10°C. VII-IX.
Note: all green parts (leaves, stem, flowers, fruits and seeds) as well as the raw tuber are poisonous if ingested !
Bulbils are not available for a delivery to the U.S.
