Hibiscus coccineus (Scarlet Rose Mallow)

Hibiscus coccineus (Scarlet Rose Mallow)
180 (240)cm, Scarlet Rose Mallow or Scarlet Hibiscus is an utmost beautiful, yet still rarely cultivated perennial herbaceous shrub from wet areas in S USA (Georgia, and Alabama to C Florida). It makes tall annual stalks with quite large, brilliant scarlet red flowers above palmately-divided leaves. The latter as well as its stems are nicely red tinged. As in the related Swamp Mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos) the stalks die back in winter and re-sprout in following spring. For any very humus rich, always slightly moist soil in full sun. During winter stop watering and preferably cover the dormant rootstock with a mulch-layer to give some additional protection from freezing through. VII-IX.
