30 (50)cm, Syrian Majoran or locally called Za'atar is a rarely cultivated Majoran, and an essential ingredient for the traditional Lebanese cookery (e. g. Manaeesh, a very tasty pita bread). It is a perennial species with oval, densely pubescent, highly aromatic leaves and terminal globose or shortly cylindrical clusters with white flowers. Seeds from a population in Rechdibbine (Lebanon) at some 550m. For any rich, well drained soil in a protected spot in full sun. Plants are fully winterhardy in Central Europe with some shelter from winter wetness. VI-VIII.
