3 (5)m, Canary Elderberry makes impressively large, broadly feathered, smooth hairy leaves and white clusters of small flowers followed by juicy blackish berries in late summer on mature plants. A very rare, highly threatened species native of the laurel forest with only few remaining specimens in the wild. This decorative species is currently in an artificial propagation program for a later reintroduction to nature on the Canary Islands. Keep frostfree and cool in winter at some 5-15°C, sunny to partially shaded. Reduce watering. Even as immature specimen it makes a nice container plant for a slightly heated greenhouse or cool wintergarden. Older plants are fully hardy in Central Europe in a protected, partially shaded spot in the garden. IV-V.
