Viola palmensis (La Palma Violet) Exclusive
20 (40)cm, La Palma Violet is a rare species from the subalpine region of the northeastern mountain range of the Caldera de Taburiente on La Palma, where it occurs in few sites in rocky soils at an altitude of some 2.100m. It is similar to the Teide Violet (Viola cheiranthiifolia) and makes narrowly lanceolate, slightly leathery, dull green leaves with a shining silvery surface and numerous large, pale lilac blue to mauve flowers with a small yellow heart. Cultivation in pure pumice (alternatively to be tried in crushed lava). Water plants always carefully from beneath and protect leaves from direct rain. Ideal under cold glass or for the unheated greenhouse, temporarily endures freezing down to -12°C in winter, keep always sunny and provide good air ventilation. IV-VI.
Stratified seed: Seed of this species does not need a cooling period after sowing, it will readily germinate at some 20°C within 2 to 4 weeks.
