Origanum (Majoran and Oregano)

Oregano or Majoran are very aromatic, mostly perennial herbs with a woody base. Many species are used as aromatic herbs in the Mediterranean and West Asian cookery. They are easily cultivated in any well drained, preferably rocky soil in a sunny spot. Excellent for the rock garden where they are protected from permament winter wetness. Sow seeds on any well drained soil in full sun. Do not cover the fine seeds with soil and keep pots at some 15°C to 25°C in a protected spot outside. Even young plants already show a strong aroma. All are USDA Climate Zone 7. 30 seeds per package. |

It grows as a binanual to short lived semiperennial and has oval, finely pubescent (= hairy) leaves and terminal cylindrical clusters with small rose white flowers. Ideal as a perennial pot plant for any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. Reduce watering in winter and keep plants at a minimum of some 5°C. Origanum syriacum (Syrian Oregano)30 (50)cm, Syrian Majoran, locally called Za'atar, is a rarely cultivated Majoran, and an essential ingredient for the traditional Lebanese cookery (e. g. Manaeesh, a very tasty pita bread). It is a perennial species with oval, densely pubescent, highly aromatic leaves and terminal globose or shortly cylindrical clusters with white flowers. Seeds from a population in Rechdibbine (Lebanon) at some 550m. For any rich, well drained soil in a protected spot in full sun.
