Abroma augusta (Devil's Cotton)

2 (4)m, Devil's Cotton is the only species in this genus and widely spread in Asia. It is a tall and fast growing woody shrub to small tree with showy pendulous, dark wine red flowers. High quality fibers are produced from the stem. The entire plant and the seed pod are covered with short bristly and irritating hairs, thus it has to be handled with care. Plants can be cut back well in spring if they get too tall. For any rich, well drained substrate in a sunny spot throughout the year and a winter minimum of 20°C. Seeds are from a wild collection in northern Vietnam. V-IX.
