Smilax (Subtropical Carrion Flower)

Carrion Flowers or Smilax are evergreen climbers from slightly moist, humus rich soils from the Mediterranean, the Canary islands, Central and South America and East Asia. They are nice foliage plants with heart-shaped to oval, usually glossy and leathery leaves and axillary born to pendulous racemes of rather small flowers followed by ornamental, densely packed bright orange to red berries. For any humus rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. All Smilax species require a climbing aid. Keep drier and sunny in winter at a minimum of some 5°C (Mediterranean and Canary species), respectivelay 10°C (tropical species from Asia and the Americas). Sow in any rich soil in a sunny spot at a minimum of some 20°C throughout the year. Germination is irregular in all Smilax species and may take several weeks to several motnhs. After germination keep seedlings in partial shade. Please note, that all parts are poisonous if swollen. All are USDA Climate Zone 10. 7 seeds per package. |
