Atropa or Belladonna have a perennial rootstock from which the annual stems emerge in spring. They bear bell-shaped flowers which are followed by ornamental, glossy, blackish-purple to greenish-yellow berries (stronlgy poisenous). Very easy in cultivation for any rich soil in partially shaded spots. Henbane Bells or European Scopolias belong to a genus which os close to Belladonna (Atropa spp.) and the Asian genus Atropanthe, yet as seeds are rarely available, most species are hardly known in cultivation. Similar to Atropa they grow from a perennial, long-lived rootstock. Several species make very tall annual shoots with plain green leaves and ornamental, axillary, horizontally hold to pendulous, greenish-yellow, reddish-green to violet bellflowers followed by yellowish-green berries inside an inflated calyx. For any rich, well drained soil in a sunny to partially shaded spot. All species are very nice border plants. Sow flat from autumn or late spring in any well drained, yet humus rich soil. Transplant dormant rootstock in autumn after leaves have withered. Note: All parts (especially the seducing berries) are poisonous if ingested ! All are USDA Climate Zone 6. 20 seeds per package. |
