Red Pitahaya and Yellow Pitahaya belong to the cactus family (Cactaceae) and are a climbing species from tropical areas in South America. They have beautiful large cream-white flowers followed by large ovoid, bright magenta-red (Hylocereus undatus - Red Pitahaya) or bright yellow (Selenicereus megalantus - Yellow Pitahaya) fruits with a transparent, slightly sweet, refreshing fruit pulp. Easily cultivated in any well drained soil, on an organic basis in partial shade to full sun. Keep drier in winter at a minimum of some 12°C. Older plants require a climbing aid. Sow seeds flat on any well drained, humus rich, slightly sandy soil in a sunny spot at some 20°C. Cover seeds only slightly with soil. In winter place pots very sunny. Carefully transplant seedlings as soon as they are strong enough. 20 seeds per package. |
