Solanum is a broad genus within the nightshade family (Solanaceae) with some of the most poisonous, yet usually very decorative plants known. However some of the subtropical and tropical species in this genus are widely cultivated for their edible, aromatic and delicious fruits. These fruit species offered here are native to Latin and South America, Africa, and some other tropical areas around the world. All are easily grown in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot and sufficient watering and fertilization in summer. Some may be treated as annuals in the garden, whereas the perennial, woody, shrub-like species grow excellently in pots in a warm wintergarden or greenhouse with a minimum of some 15°C in winter with reduced watering. Sow flat in any humus-rich soil at some 20°C throughout the year in a sunny spot. Keep the perennial species drier and sunny in winter at a minimum of some 15°C. Transplant annuals to the garden after the last freezing nights in late spring to early summer. Note: All green parts and immature, green fruits are poisonous if ingested ! 20 seeds per package. You find more Solanum species in these categories: Solanum (Winterhardy Nightshade) and Solanum (Tropical Nightshade). |
