Strelitzia reginae 'Mandela's Gold' (Yellow Bird-of-Paradise)90 (120)cm, Yellow Bird-of-Paradise makes a dense cluster of dark green and utmost showy flower stalks crowned by a canoe shaped inflorescence with dark yellow and rich blue bracts in the cultivar Mandela's Gold. It was raised at Kirstenbosch Botanic Garden in South Africa by inbreeding yellow-flowering plants over several generations. The result was a pure line of plants with yellow (instead of orange) bracts which come true from seed. It was first named 'Kirstenbosch Gold' but then later changed to 'Mandela's Gold' in honor of Nelson Mandela. This cultivar is much slower growing than the common orange form. Our seeds derive from hand-pollinated, true to color plants grown on the Canary islands. For any rich, well drained substrate in a sunny spot throughout the year. Keep drier in winter at a minimum of some 10°C. IV-VII. |
