The three genera Gonospermum, Lugoa and Tanacetum are closely related and distributed in Macaronesia, the Mediterranean region and Eurasia. Macaronesian subtropical species are mostly shrublike perennials with semi-woody stems, whereas most Mediterraenean and Eurasian winterhardy species are herbaceous perennials. All have dissected, sometimes feathered, aromatic leaves and ornamental, broad, bright yellow, or white terminal inflorescences on tall stems. All are most ornamental plants for any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. They make excellent, long lasting cut flowers as well. Keep subtropical species frostfree at a minimum of some 10°C, drier and sunny in winter. Winterhardy species enjoy any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot in the garden. Sow dustlike or fine seeds flat on any rich, well drained soil in full sun at some 15°C to 20°C preferably in mid spring. Do not cover seeds with soil and keep the soil slightly moist from beneath. Transplant winterhardy species to the final spot in the garden as soon as plants are strong enough. 20 seeds per package. |
