Zea (Decoration Corn)

Red Strawberry Corn is a wild variety in the large complex around Zea mays, which has been grown in many cultivars for centuries by the indigenous population in South America as one of their most important food source. It is growing as an annual grass with a tall stalk covered with long, fresh-green leaves. The axillary born cobs have brownish-red seeds similar in appearance to a large strawberry, and are used for decoration purposes. It will thrive in any humus rich, very well drained soil in full sun with sufficient watering during the growing period.
Sow flat preferably from end of March to mid April in any rich, well drained soil, three seeds per pot. Keep pots in a sunny and constantly warm spot inside, e.g. on a window sill, in a heated greenhouse or in the wintergarden. Transplant seedlings to the open garden as soon as temperatures will stay above 10°C at night in late spring to early summer.

150cm, Red Strawberry Corn is an annual grass from South America with tall stalks covered with long, narrow, fresh green leaves. The ornamental strawberry-like cobs contain numerous small reddish brown seeds. These are edible when still unripe and soft (mealy taste) or prepared as "mini-popcorn" when fully ripe and dry. However, usually cops are used dired for decoration purposes only. Easily grown in any rich, well drained soil in full sun and plenty of watering during the growing period. VII-IX.
