Watsonia is a S African genus from middle to high altitudes, usually on grassy slopes, which are moist in spring and early summer. Plenty of decorative, sword like leaves and showy large flowering stems with plenty of usually tuberous flowers in brilliant colors. Good for any sheltered spot, add some extra protection (mulch) in winter or grow as pot plants in an unheated wintergarden with little freezing in winter only. Most species are usually evergreen to semi-evergreen, leaves will die down at temperatures below freezing, rhizomes will emerge again in late spring (April). If being cultivated under frostfree conditions (recommended for colder climates), several species will already gain flowering size within one year. Sow late spring in any well drained soil in full sun. Best if pre-cultivated under frost-free conditions for two years. Keep pots frost free at max. 10°C in winter. Transplant young corms rather deep (some 15cm/6") in fall of the second year. A thick mulch layer as winter protection is recommendable for younger plants. All are USDA Climate Zone 8 unless otherwise specified. 20 seeds per package. |
