Gamander is a broad genus from the Mediterranean and Eurasia. They are dwarf ground covering perennials or small woody shrubs. Several species are cultivated for their ornamental flowers or for their aromatic leaves. They are easily cultivated in any rich, well drained, preferably slightly rocky substrate in full sun throughout the year. Winterhardy species (marked with USDA zone 6 in the list below) are excellent in a protected spot in the rock garden. All other less frost resistant species are best grown under frostfree conditions at a winter minimum of some 5°C and careful watering. Sow seeds flat in any rich, well drained, rocky or sandy substrate at some 20°C throughout the year. Cover seeds very shallowly with soil. Keep pots in a very sunny spot and transplant as soon as seedlings are strong enough. 20 seeds per package. |
