Menyanthes (Buckbean) & Nymphoides (Fringed Water-Lily)

Buckbean belongs to a monotypic genus with only this single European and North American species, whereas Fringed Water-Lily is a Eurasian species from a large genus in Eurasia, North America, South America, Africa and Australia. Both belong to the Gentian family (Gentianaceae). Menyanthes is a suberect growing to creeping herbaceous perennial with trifoliate leaves and showy inflorescences with pure white fringed flowers. It is native of wet, marshy spots, often growing in low water at the edge of swamps and ponds in Eurasia and North America. For any humus rich, always moist soil. An excellent plant for the border of a pond. Nymphoides is a pure aquatic species with a similar habit to a water lily and showy rich yellow flowers in summer. It does best with the root stock entirely submersed in a flat pond, however it will grow in shallow water and at the edge of a pond as well.
Sow from autumn to early spring in pots filled with pure sphagnum or peat, and always cover pot with 1cm water. Seeds require a prolonged cooling period in winter before they may germinate by mid spring.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6.
