Melothria scabra (Mexican Mini Cucumber)

200 (400)cm, Mini Gourd or Mouse Melon is a vigorously fast growing herbaceous perennial climber from Mexico and Central America, which can be grown as an annual as well. It has numerous small, oblong, green-striped mini cucumbers. Unripe fruits are edible and have a delicious refreshing taste and which can be eaten raw or sliced in salads. Mature fruits are toxic and have a highly laxative effect. Easily cultivated in any humus rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. Either cultivate plants as annuals or keep the dormant rootstock in winter rather dry at a minimum of some 10°C. VI-IX.
