200 (400)cm, Bleeding Heart Spurge (syn. Homalanthus populifolius) is an ornamental tropical evergreen shrub from the island of Somoa and eastern Australia and has nice foliage turning bright orange-red just before falling. Care must be taken to avoid any contact with the white skin and eye irritating latex sap from injured plants. This species (sometimes spelled Omolanthus nutans) has been traditionally used by the island inhabitants of Somoa to treat Hepatitis. Recent scientific research has given evidence that an extract from the bark may be useful as a supporting treatment against HIV. An easily grown pot plant for any rich, well drained substrate in a sunny spot throughout the year and a winter minimum of some 15°C with reduced watering. VI-VIII. |
