4 (12)m, makes short prickles on the bark and has trifoliate leaves and spectacular scarlet flowers before leaves unfold. Flower are followed by seed pods with ornamental bright red seeds. For any rich, well drained substrate in a sunny spot throughout the year and a winter minimum of some 12°C with reduced watering. VII-IX.
