Aeonium (Giant Houseleek)

Giant Sempervivum or Giant Houseleek is made up of some 47 known plus a couple of recently discovered species, out of which only 6 naturally occur outside the Canary Islands. They are typical succulents from this beautiful archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, where they conquered almost all habitats: the lower dry succulent zone, the dry pine tree forest, the rather moist, evergreen laurel forest and last but not least the subalpine zone at some 2.200m (on Tenerife). They are still rather uncommon plants with sometimes astonishingly large, usually bright yellow to white, compact inflorescences (in Aeonium nobile these are intense orange-red) with numerous flowers. They are easily cultivated if kept rather dry and sunny in winter at a minimum of some 15°C. In a very unfortunate publication in 1989, a complete mess has been produced in this genus by some "researcher" (H.Y. Liu) who has never investigated any Aeonium species in situ. We mostly do not follow these changes and keep the old names, as some future study with more state-of-the-art analysis methods will for sure reveal some very different relationships. Sow dust-like seeds flat on any well drained soil, keep soil slightly moist from beneath. Do not cover seeds with soil. 50 seeds per package. Aeonium glandulosum25 (40)cm ø, one out of two Aeonium species which are endemic of Madeira. It prefers shaded to sunny spots on vertical cliffs in especially the North of the island and few areas in the southern part. It is very alike Aeonium tabuliforme and belongs to the same subgenus within Aeonium (Canariensae). In comparison to the latter its' leaves are broader and rhombic at the end, and it usually produces a couple of offsets. They will gain up to 40 cm ø with a yellowish inflorescence of up to 30 cm in height. V-VII. |

Aeonium glutinosum20cm ø, one of the two known species from the Madeiran archipelago, and related to Aeonium nobile from La Palma. It is a very ornamental species from open, sunny spots on cliffs and rocky soils. It produces lax and large rosettes (up to 20cm in diameter). This species offsetts freely at an already young stage, and makes a lax, orange-yellow inflorescence. Leaves are dark green, broadly spathulate and very sticky (hence its name !). V-VII. |

Aeonium gorgoneum (Cabo Verde Giant Houseleek)40 (70)cm, Cabo Verde Giant Houseleek is the only Aeonium species endemic to the Cape Verde islands, and which is virtually unknown in cultivation. It branches moderately and its' leaf rosettes reach up to 15cm in diameter. Leaves are grayish-bluish-green with an orange-red shade in full sun. Stems are smooth and even. The for this species distinctive flowers have a rich yellow color with an orange tinge and are set in early spring. Most plants in cultivation are not true-to-type, but some hybrids with other Aeonium species. The original collection from which our mother plants descend was made in the 90ties of last century by the botanical garden of the University of Frankfurt, Germany at San Antonio, Lombo do Mar (600m), Cabo Verde Islands. Aeonium korneliuslemsii100 (150)cm, the real species from western Morocco and not the red-leafed cultivar, commonly sold under this name by most nurseries. It is looking very similar to Aeonium arboreum (Gran Canaria) or Aeonium holochrysum (Tenerife), however, Aeonium korneliuslemsii has more oblongate lanceolate leaves. It produces dome shaped sulphurous yellow inflorescences. II-IV. |
