Australian Desert Peas usually are sprawling semiperennials to perennials, or semi-woody sub shrubs from arid areas restricted to Australia. Only one species is native to South Africa. Several species have ornamental, bright colored flowers, of which Swainsona formosa (syn. Clianthus formosus) from Central Australia probably has the most beautiful of all, not only for their unusual large size, but for their bright scarlet color with a contrasting central black blotch. Australian desert peas are suitable for any rich, very well drained, preferably inorganic substrate in full sun throughout the year. In winter reduce watering to a minimum and keep plants at a minimum of some 15°C. Sow seeds flat in a very well drained, rather inorganic substrate at some 15°C to 20°C. At this temperature range seeds will germinate rather evenly in two to four weeks. Few seeds may stay dormant for a longer time, thus do not discart pots with ungerminated seeds too early. In all Swainsona species higher temperatures above 20°C will slow down or even impede the germination process and seeds will stay dormant until temperatures will go down. Preferably use some inorganic substrate (e.g. grit sand, crushed lava, etc.), as a humus based substrate will usually cause some fungal infections of roots in seedlings. Keep pots in full sun, so that seedlings will develop vigorously. 10 seeds per package. |
