100 (150)cm, Madeira Buttercup is a perennial with large, fresh green, acer-like leaves and large, brilliant yellow flower cups on a tall stem. This subspecies is slightly larger in all parts than subspecies cortusifolius from the Canary islands. It is native of rich, rather moist soils in the laurel forest on Madeira (Portugal). For any rich, well drained soil in a sunny to partially shaded spot. Plants go dormant in summer, then keep the succulent bulbous rhizomes drier until new leaves emerge in late autumn to mid winter.
