5 (10)m, a still rarely seen species from Brazil, Argentina and neighboring countries. Passiflora elegans bears threelobed, dark green leaves and showy flowers with white petals and white, lilac and winered coronal filaments. Flowers are selffertile and followed by small, up to 7 cm long egg-shaped fruits which turn yellowish-orange with maturity. The fruit pulp is edible and has a very aromatic, sweet and slightly aciduous taste reminding of a mixture between sweet Passiflora ligularis and aciduous Passiflora edulis. Still somewhat immature fruits have a slightly bitter aftertaste, fruits are fully mature and palatable as soon as fruits starts to shrinkle. Due to its rather small fruits, this species is rather an ornamental than a potential fruit plant. Easily grown in any rich, well drained substrate and a winter minimum of some 10°C in a sunny spot.
