40 (60)cm, Madeira Blue Bell is a rare and threatened, very tall and large Scilla native of Madeira (Portugal). It produces severals, up to 10 cm broad leaves with a nice reddish edge, from a very large bulb, which may gain 10 cm and more in diameter. The racemes reach up to 60 cm in height and have numerous small pale lilac flowers followed by fleshy dark green fruits maturing to yellow. A not winter hardy species which requires a minimum of some 5°C in winter in a sunny spot and careful watering. Summer dormant. Seeds are always extremely scarce. XI-III. |
