Pavonia hastata (Spearleaf Swampmallow)

100 (140)cm, Spearleaf Swampmallow is an ornamental perennial from South America (Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay). It makes slender, somewhat prostate stems with narrow leaves and numerous light rose flowers in summer. Similar to several other Pavonia species, Pavonia hastata produces cleistogamous flowers in summer with long days and short nights, i.e. flowers produce seed without opening. With shorter days in autumn and spring, flowers open completely. Pavonia hastata is sometimes offered as Pavonia brasiliensis, which is an unresolved name. For any rich, well drained substrate in a sunny spot throughout the year. In winter keep drier at a minimum of some 15°C. V-VIII.
