2 (7)m, Blue Mahoe Hibiscus (syn. Hibiscus elatus) is very tall and broad shrub to small tree from Cuba and Jamaica, and naturalized on US. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. It makes large, leathery leaves and showy, rather large flowers which open bright yellow and fade to intense orange. Talipariti elatum is rarely seen in cultivation outside its native range, where it is occassionally planted for its excellent wood which may range in color from brown, green, bluish, purplish to grey. For any rich, well drained substrate in full sun throughout the year. In winter reduce watering and keep plants at a minimum of some 20°C. III-X. |
