100 (170)cm, Ashwagandha or Wintercherry is a perennial, evergreen woody shrub with a very wide distributional area from the Mediterranean through eatern Asia. In India it is widely used in traditional Ayurveda medicine as an antibiotic and a narcotic. The small inconspicuous yellowish green flowers are followed by ornamental glossy, orange red berries (poisonous) partially embedded in a green calyx. For any rich, well drained soil in full sun throughout the year. In winter keep cooler at a minimum of some 10°C with reduced watering. VII-X.
