Tetragonolobus purpureus (Red Asparagus Pea)

20 (40)cm, Red Asparagus Pea (syn. Lotus purpureus) is a trailing perennial native of rocky, sunny sites in the Mediterranean. It makes trilobed leaves and small showy dark red flowers followed by winged seedpods, which are edible when harvested unripe and the cooked. These have an asparagus-like taste. Easily cultivated in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. Excellent groundcoverer in the rock garden. VI-VIII.
